Punjab & Haryana High Court Takes Suo Moto Cognisance Of Shortage Of Hospital Staff In Chandigarh's PGIMER Hospital

The Punjab & Haryana High Court on Thursday took suo moto cognisance of the shortage of nursing staff and hospital attendants in Chandigarh's Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

Justice Anil Kshetarpal and Justice Aman Chaudhary said, “On the basis of news item published in 'Times of India' on 17.06.2025, highlighting the plight of patients and their attendants on account of a substantial shortage of hospital attendants and nursing staff, the present petition has been entertained as a writ petition.”

Senior Standing Counsel Amit Jhanji, representing PGIMER, Chandigarh, sought one week's time to file a status report.

According to the newspaper report, the hospital is facing a severe shortage of hospital attendants, with a staggering 62% of sanctioned posts lying vacant.

Out of a total sanctioned strength of 519 hospital attendants across all grades, a massive 62% of these crucial positions remain unfilled, it added.

The matter is listed for June 27, for further consideration.
