The Punjab & Haryana High Court on Monday (May 19) sought response form the Chandigarh Authorities on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed seeking directions to constitute a committee to regulate slaughter houses in the city.

The PIL was filed by a resident of Chandigarh Jairoop Riar, seeking direction to constitute the committee and to hold the meetings to supervise and monitor the issues relating to the Slaughter Houses and meet shops in the city.

It stated that in compliance of Apex Court's ruling in Laxmi Narayan Modi v. UOI, 2012 the committee has been constituted in 2012 by the Department of Urban Planning, comprising 12 members but till date no action has been taken.

"Slaughter houses generate substantial quantities of efluents and said wastes. These slaughter houses causes nuisance by way of foul smell due to improper handling. It is. therefore, necessary to install pollution control devices so that they can comply with the prescribed standards and the existing slaughter houses need to to maintain hygienic conditions," added the plea.

The matter is listed for July 24, for further consideration.
